Murder in the Magic City

Murder in the Magic City is an annual book conference for writers and readers in Birmingham, Alabama. I just got back and can report that it was excellent. It's an invitation only event for writers -- so there were only 16 authors there. About 150 readers attended the main all-day event in Birmingham, and another 150 at a separate event the following day in Wetumpka -- about 50 miles away. Both were great. The area has an excellent community of readers, writers and friends. And the conference… Continue

Short Story in EQMM!

I have a short story in the July 2008 issue of ELLERY QUEEN MYSTERY MAGAZINE (here's a mystery, the July issue is published in May!!)

I'm very excited. It's a rather unusual story called "Murder on the Main Line" and is based on a woman I knew and loved -- except for the murder, of course.

If you read it, please let me know what you think.

All the latest

I just submitted my new book to my publisher! I'm waiting to hear what they think.

Finding the right title is an interesting process. This book started out as a short story published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine in December 2006. That story was written under the title "Murder at the Ass End of Nowhere." Ass End of Nowhere is a phrase from my childhood -- used to describe my small hometown, or the even more remote, rural parts of the county.

But EQMM doesn't do ass,…

Report from Bouchercon 2007 -- South From Alaska!

In a word -- mush!

Bouchercon in Anchorage was 2 parts Jack London and 1 part Northern Exposure. Full of interesting juxtapositions and outright contradictions. No internet connection in the hotel (the Anchorage Hilton and city's tallest building!). But the governor spoke at the Award ceremony cocktail party. Lee Child wasn't there. But Dana Stabenow was everywhere. I wasn't allowed to show a dvd at my author's solo presentation. But they kept having CSI Alaska presentations…

Meredith,

You wrote me four or five years ago on CrimeSpace.  I just re-introduced myself to this site.  How is the book(s) going.  I'm reading the Lee Child "Reacher" series after reading all of the Michael Connelly Bosch stories.  Good stuff.

Thank you for your invitation. I'm delighted to meet such a pedigreed author and one who boxes yet. I like the back of beyond described as the "arse end of nowhere" and wonder at the chasteness of EQMM. But more strength to your authorial and pugilistic arm. Cheers, Jim Mitchell

Meredith, I am so impressed that you've landed EQMM multiple times and that your mystery is such a success! Congratulations! Look for me at Bouchercon.

Hello,

Did you read about me on MY PAGE, or Google: John Jenney for my family's history ( 1623 Plymouth Rock ).

Hi Meredith,

Thanks for finding me here. I'm very new and a little distracted at the moment. I've got a new book coming out - A Demon Awaits, October 15th. And I've got a book-to-movie in the works. I optioned the rights and there is a professional writing the script, but I do spend lots of time daydreaming, worrying and sometimes even advising.

Great to meet you.

Dear Meredith,
Thank you so much for inviting me to be your friend here on Crime Space.
You certainly have a busy life, don't you? I've always wondered what boxing was like. I bet it's wonderful exercise and it makes you feel totally alive!
I hope we become the best of friends and you can contact me any time you need me, ok?
Sincerely,
