- My first novel, The Hanging Woods (Houghton Mifflin) is a dark, disturbing murder mystery set in mid-70's Alabama. My second novel, again with Houghton Mifflin, entitled Gray Baby, will be released in March 2009.
The Hanging Woods has so far received excellent reviews from the national journals, including a starred review. Publisher's Weekly said, "The squeamish might want to stay away from this potent first novel...[it] stays suspenseful from start to finish." The Bulletin's starred review said, "Sanders handles...narration deftly, seeding it with clues...but masterfully camouflaging the story as an atmospheric period buddy tale, complete with the lacerating unchallenged racism of the place and time, until the corruption becomes inescapably overt. Readers accustomed to literary morality setting like concrete from the get-go will find this bracingly unsettling."
Houghton Mifflin is marketing it as To Kill a Mockingbird meets Stand by Me, only much darker. And though the reviews have been a big help, the best news just came from Ed Sullivan, who is a member of the American Library Association. My editor recently informed me that Mr. Sullivan just picked The Hanging Woods as a must Must read for all librarians. Who am I to argue with the ALA? I certainly can't complain.
And please don't be concerned with the fact that the three boys in this book are fourteen years old. These are some seriously disturbed and bad young men who will haunt you.
I'm trying to get the word out, especially to the adult crime/mystery audience. I know that sometimes adult readers shy away from a book written from the perspective of a teen, but I believe a well written, engaging story always trumps age constrictions.
