Crime Writers at Adelaide Writers' Week

07 March 2008. 11.25am

For those of you not familiar with the event, every 2 years the city of Adelaide in South Australia hosts a Festival of Arts, and a part of the festival is Writers' Week, a 6 day program of local, national and international writers (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, war correspondents, essayists) speaking about their work, launching new novels, and discussing themes of their work on various panels, as well as various 'meet the author' sessions. It is the biggest… Continue

Crimespace has made my day

As part of an Advanced Diploma I'm doing in creative writing, I'm writing a new novel (speculative crime). So I hit the net looking for a supportive site where readers and writers of genre fiction could discuss books, writing and influences. What a boon then to find this site!

Thankyou to those who so quickly expressed a wish to be my friends. Apologies if I don't yet know the rules around here, but I'll learn quick (promise) and look forward to meeting more people and swapping some… Continue

That seems to sum it up well. Operating in dual modes is how I live. Another example: I sincerely believe that I will reach my goals as a writer. Yet, I make decisions that structure my like in such a way that I will be happy regardless of my writing.

Hi Craigh
So glad to hear that you have novel "doing the rounds of publishers." Best wishes on that.
The character discussion is fascinating. I always start out with a "character sheet," but soon abandon it as the story and characters evolve. My novels do tend to be plot driven, though.

Hi Steven,

What an honest introduction you've given yourself. I'm no expert but happy for you to ask me anything that you think I might know.

Thanks Tony. I have my first manuscript, a speculative fiction novel, doing the rounds of publishers now, so I'm starting to appreciate just how tricky it can be to get work read. But I'll hang in there.

Welcome Steven. I'm only about a week "older" in Crimespace teerms than you. Definitely still learning my way around and find the system has some odd quirks. I, too, am doing a diploma in writing with crime writing my chosen genre. One thing I've founed is that writing is the easy part. It is the promoting, selling and getting agents/publishers to look at your work that is the hard part. Good luck with your endeavours. Write on.

Thanks, Jack. Historical Crime was my introduction to the whole crime/thriller/mystery genre, so I retain a soft spot for it, even if I don't read as much of it now as I once did.

Good, good selection of authors and drama. Historical crime is one of my favorites.
